Avaya Certification Design Track Objectives

The Avaya Professional Certification Program for Design is targeted to all Avaya Design Associates as well as Avaya BusinessPartners and Customers. The Design candidate should be able to:
  • Design a solution based upon input from Sales and Customer to meet a specific technical or business need
  • Use programming level tools and toolkits to customize Avaya products/solutions beyond the generic application
  • Build additional functionality or customized functionality

A Competency is as a set of knowledge, skills, capabilities, attitudes, or behaviors that characterize excellent performance within a specific context.

A Proficiency is a defined range of capability within a competency. Proficiency levels reflect a layering of increasingly complex skills.

Levels of proficiency are defined as follows:

  • Strong Performer (Simple Network Solutions): basic competency – internal/individual focus
  • High Performer (Medium Network Solutions): higher degree of competency – external focus, influences team, peers, and others - help team members develop competency proficiency
  • Role Model (Complex Network Solutions): expert application of competency – broad, external focus on others, cross team influence, leader/mentor for this competency within the organization Performance Behaviors are measurable, observable, results-focused behaviors.
The following chart lists the Design competencies and performance behaviors used in the initial exam development process. This information is a baseline and is tailored for each specific exam. Performance behaviors are representative of a High Performer level of proficiency.

Competency

Performance Behaviors
Customer Needs
  • Describe the customer’s industry
  • Describe the customer’s position in the industry
  • Identify customer’s time frame • Identify customer’s motivation for change
  • Confirm/clarify customer’s expectations (acceptance criteria)
  • Prioritize customer’s wants and needs
  • Define the feature functionality the systems must retain or integrate in the new design
  • Determine budget constraints for the design
Customer Environment
  • Identify voice systems
  • Identify data systems
  • Identify current environmental conditions
    • Power/Electrical
    • Floor plans
    • HVAC
    • Facility
    • Non-standard environmental issues o Codes restrictions/regulations (NEC, FCC, building

Conceptual or High-Level Designs

Match the proposed design to the customer requirements

  • Apply appropriate transport technology
    • Describe the purpose, features, and functions of T1, ISDN, Frame Relay, Analog Trunking, and DDS (Level 1)
    • Identify the process in capacity planning
    • Calculate the required bandwidth for the customer solution
    • Identify the process involved in designing the configuration using Ethernet, token ring, FDDI.
    • Identify the Ethernet standards (10/100/1000) and their uses
    • Describe the differences between repeater and switching hubs
    • Identify LAN components and their applications (e.g., hub, bridge, switch)
    • Identify Internet connectivity options
    • Identify communication devices used for Internet connectivity
  • Apply appropriate protocols
    • Identify the applicable protocols for a system
    • Describe protocol families and their purposes
    • Identify routing protocol types and their application to design requirements
    • Determine the interoperability of vendor products, standards, and services
  • Apply appropriate applications based on industry profile
  • Apply appropriate products
    • Apply the appropriate product categories and associated features to a design solution for voice and VO applications
    • Apply the appropriate product categories and associated features for a data solution
    • Apply appropriate power system types and options
  • Apply appropriate standards and regulations
    • Apply appropriate licensing requirements
    • Apply domestic standards and regulations

Identify the missing components and the relevance of other components

Predict what will happen when proposed changes are implemented

Final Design
  • Create a process flow to meet a customer need
  • Label the point in a design flow
    • List options meeting requirements
    • Evaluate components (hardware, software, labor, training, documents, “as-builts”, carrier facilities, etc.)
    • Select components
    • Select vendors/partners
  • Explain the issues critical to completing the final design
  • Explain the relationship between conceptual design and final design
  • Validate the design by use of standards, analysis, test, demonstration, inspection
Feedback and Analysis
  • Obtain feedback and analysis from stakeholders
Design Documentation
  • Provide a detailed scope of work
  • Provide a design assumptions document
  • Create a design diagram(s)
  • Itemize a component list with pricing
Design Presentation
  • Present design and alternatives to decision makers for approval or changes (outcomes: approval, changes, deny)
    • Explain the importance of presenting alternative designs
    • Explain the limitations and ramifications of implementing alternative designs
    • Justify the design utilizing the design flow, customer feedback, traffic analysis, and customer requirements
  • Deliver design package to implementation team
